Tianjin has a history of more than 600 years since its establishment in 1404. In 1860, Tianjin was opened up as a trading port, and thereafter became a gateway to North China. Nowadays, Tianjin is one of the four municipal cities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government and is the largest industrial and port city in north China. Tianjin lies on the down streams of nine rivers with crisscross river courses, hence the name of Water City in Northern China. The 72-km Haihe River runs through the city of Tianjin and eventually joins the Bohai Sea, which gives the city a distinct waterway sightseeing route.
