Map & Itinerary

Yunnan, a land of natural beauty and mystery, located in the most southwest of China, has a vast territory, magnificent mountains and rivers, abundant natural resources and diverse cultures. It is known for its colorful and intriguing diversity of ethnic minority groups. We will start with Lijiang City, which enjoys a long history of over 800 years, a gathering place of Nakhi ethic group. And in the towns of Yongning and Fengke, in the villages of Zhuangzi, Liuqing and Baoshan, we’ll fully experience the dazzling diversity, as these places are a heaven for the Naxi, Mousuo, Yi and Pumi ethnic groups. Spend enough time in Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the most attractive area in Southwest China. Then move on to Zhongdian at the Tibetan Plateau with the famous Dragon Snow Mountain. We will partly follow the same trail that pilgrims take on their way to Mt. Kawagebo. The scenery on the way is breathtaking and the hiking will take us to one of most beautiful snow-capped Mountains. On one of the slopes of the majestic Meili Snow Mountain is the Mingyong Glacier. Descending 10 kilometers into the Mingyong Valley, it is probably the lowest glacier in the world. During this trekking route, we will not only visit impressive natural sites but will reach the rarely visited villages which still maintain their traditional lifestyle from thousand years ago. Tucked away at the foot of Mt. Kawagebo is the stunningly beautiful and isolated village of Yubeng. With the exception of the occasional mountain climbing expedition and Buddhists on a pilgrimage to the mountain and sacred waterfall a half-day's walk away, Yubeng is rarely visited by outsiders. The other highlights in this tour are the visit to the Cizhong Christian Church, the Snub-nose Monkey in Tacheng, Danxia Landform in Liming. It is certainly a great tour for family and is guaranteed unforgettable.

Note: All the time and distance shown here are approximate and indicative only, if there is inconsistency, it will depend on the weather, local road condition and other actual situation.

Holiday Itinerary

  • ARRIVE IN LIJIANG

Arrive at Lijiang airport, pickup by our experienced tour guide and transfer to hotel. Unlike most of the old towns in China, there is no city wall due to a superstitious belief of the local ruler whose family name is Mu. If the Chinese character 'Mu' is put into a frame which represents the city wall, we have the character 'Kun' which means 'siege' or 'predicament'. Wooden structures, mountains, small rivers and lanes integrate harmoniously in this mountain town. It is also an enclave of ethnic minority cultures. We can walk down the cobblestone streets over 800 years and see the traditional way of life of the rugged mountain people of Nakhi (Naxi) Minority. Then drive about 20 minutes to explore Baisha Mural in the ancient capital of Naxi Kingdom in Baisha village. Next learn more about the Naxi at the Dongba Museum, where we can taste national culture from the layout of its yard and building facilities. Go back to Lijiang, on the way, have a short visit to Black Dragon Pool where is the perfect place to take photo of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with reflection in the Pond.

    • Meals LD

  • DRIVE TO LUGU LAKE

Today, we will take a long drive (280km/6-7hrs) to Lugu Lake, the remote Paradise on earth. On the way, enjoy the beautiful view among the huge mountains and rivers and stop some times to capture the beautiful Yulong Snow Mountain from the other side where the normal tourists will never see at all. We also could stop to have a short visit to a small village of Yi Nationalities. Upon arrival, enjoy the exploration around the fairy Lugu Lake and visit a typical Mosuo Family near the Lake and stay for a wonderful night. Mosuo Culture has attracted a lot of interest in recent years. The Mosuo community has been isolated for a very long time and has lived a self reliant and self-managed lifestyle. They don't have a written language, so their entire history is an oral history, passed down from generation to generation. The Mosuo are often referred to as China's "last matrilineal society." One of the best known, and least understood, aspects of Mosuo culture is their practice of what has been termed "walking marriage".

  • DRIVE TO YONGNING / TREK TO ZHUANGZI

This morning we will drive along the Lugu Lake northwest to Yongning Town, which means a place of eternal peace and stability. Yongning is surrounded by mountains and spring-like all year round, thus many Chinese ethnic groups live here. (Note: From now on, Cook, porters or stablemen and horses will escort you till Baoshan Stone Town.) When arrive, visit Mosuo Market and Zhamei Monastery. Then, start our trekking to Zhuangzi Village with original forest on the way, where we can meet Yi, Pumi and Naxi Villages and feel the spiritual atmosphere there. There are several up-and-down parts today. We will climb over the Zhuangzi Pass (3,400m) for about 4 hours. Standing on the top of mountain, we will have a great view of Yongning basin and Jinsha River Valley. Then down the hill and arrive to the Yi Nationality’s area. Yi is the largest population of the minority groups in Yunnan and is well-known for their Torch Festival, from which is believed to have the power to ward off evils and protect the growth of crops by repelling insects. At the end of hiking, we will stay in a village named Zhuangzi and chat with Pumi Families around the fireplace in the middle of the living room on the upper level.

We will take about 6 hours from Fenglian Village trek cross the Yangtse River to discover the Naxi’s Country until reaching the Village of Liuqing. Today is a strenuous day! With beautiful forests, village, valley view along the way. In the early morning, head south with Jinsha Jiang (Yangzi River) flowing southward on our left. In 2.5 hours, we will encounter a tough ascent to another mountain pass named Taizi (Prince) Pass with an altitude of 2,490m, steeply-incised by Jinsha Jiang. Even horses are not able to climb up here. We will have to cross two tunnels without any illumination, so torches are essential here. The first tunnel is actual the highest point of Prince Pass. The last part of the hike is not easy, we will descend a steep and narrow trail from 2,490m to 1,788m. But we will find it is rewarding with a fantastic view of Baoshan Stone Town setting on a huge stone along the bank of the Yangtse River! It is not a town made of stone as it is named, but a big village built on a huge stone. The mighty nature mother brought along a heavy stone, and the diligent Naxi People turned it into a wonderland under heaven. The Town sits there, appearing uniquely simple and unsophisticated, and exhibiting the charm of local culture at the same time.

Zhongdian is a beautiful land characterized by snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, idyllic lakes and religious culture. It is a "Utopia" free from stress, pollution and turmoil that plagues most of the cities where we live. Today we will first have a chance to immerse ourselves into Tibetan culture by wandering around the Tibetan Town of Shangri-la with huge prayer wheel everywhere. The Tibetan-style architecture here can be dated back to 1,300 years ago! After lunch at a local restaurant, explore Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhism monastery or "Little Potala" as it is affectionately known, a spiritual hub for people to discover the mystery and traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Afterwards, drive to a small hill to visit Napa Lake about 6km away. The Napa Lake Nature Reserve is the country’s largest grassland and most scene area of the plateau. We’ll enjoy the fascinating views and take photographs before getting back to Zhongdian for some souvenir shopping. Upon returning to our hotel in the evening we’ll have a delicious dinner.

  • DRIVE TO FEILAI TEMPLE

Early in the morning drive 6 to 7 hours to Feilai Temple, 10 kilometers away from Deqen Town. The view along the way is fantastic with different kinds of trees, streams down the valley, prayer flags and stupas, and Tibetan villages. From Shangri-La, after half an hour driving, we will have a short visit to Naxi Pottery Village. Then drive uphill to the Dongzhulin Lamasery built in 1667, the sixth year of the Kang Xi Period in Qing Dynasty. We can also enjoy the impressive scenery of Baima Snow Mountain if the weather is clear when we pass the top part of today at 4,292m altitude. Arrive in Feilai Temple in the late afternoon, we will have a nice sunset view of Meili Snow Mountain from the Sightseeing Platform, where we can see the 13 white pagodas meaning of the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain over 6,000 meters above sea level, known as the "Prince's 13 peaks".

  • MINGYONG GLACIERS / DRIVE TO XIDANG VILLAGE

Try to get up early in the morning, enjoy the magic sunrise of Golden Meili Snow Mountain. Then drive 1.5-hour (12km) to Mingyong village (2,230m), the starting point for the walk to the glacier. Mingyong Glaciers, an extremely long ice under the Kawakarpo Peak, may be the world's lowest glacier. This sea of ice rushes into the valley in an impressive way and expands to about 80 meters wide! The view of the glacier is the most extraordinary. The glacier retreated 200 meters in four years and these events are believed to be associated with global warming. From the village, an easy 2 hours walk leads up to the Tibetan Taizi Monastery (2,900m), from where we will have a first stunning view of the Mingyong Glacier. It’s a lovely walk, through an old forest of huge trees, overgrown with moss. The forest floor is covered in ferns and lush green plants, interspersed by the occasional wildflower. From time to time we pass piles of mani stones, prayer flags and other signs indicating certain holy rocks or trees. Then, for those with energy left can continue further up to the Lianhua Temple (3,100m). It was hard work at times, due to the altitude, but certainly worth it. After that, take only 1.5-2 hours walk down to Mingyong village, drive to Xidang Village, where we will be able to have a hot spring spa. The condition is very basic but worth to try.

  • TREK TO UPPER YUBENG

Today’s hike will be strenuous. For the first trekking section we will climb from 2,608m to over 3,720m at the Nazongla Pass, passing through beautiful, pristine alpine forest. The path zigzagging under the canopy of trees is quite damp and muddy. A Tibetan house, located at one-third of the route, sells snacks and drinks. From the summit the descent to the Upper Yubeng Village takes one or two hours. Yubeng Village is a secluded Tibetan village tucked away at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Deqen County. The only way to reach the village, which is surrounded by mountains on all sides, is by non-motorized means, such as by foot or on the back of a horse or a mule. The local villagers hold Meili Snow Mountain to be sacred, and no one has successfully scaled Meili Snow Mountain, though several teams have tried. Stay in a guesthouse in Upper Yubeng Village.

First three hours is a tough and long climb in a primitive forest, we will see some horses and yaks, as well as some wild animals if we are lucky enough. Walk along the river which originate from the Glacier Park, we will have a wonderful view of Mt. Kawagebo Glacier. The effort will be rewarded later by a spectacular landscape when we reach the high meadow plateau at 4,050m. Another one-hour climb, we will climb over a range (alt. 4,300m), and reach Cuoka Pasture. At last, arrive at the Ice Lake (alt. 4,385m) which is located at the foot of the glacier. Trek down back to Yubeng village in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunset of Kawagebo Peak. This one-day excursion is only reserved for strong hikers.

If the weather is good, we’ll wake up to a clear view of the Mt. Kawagebo glacier. After breakfast we will hike to the Holy Waterfall (Sacred Waterfall) (7km/2-3hrs), from which Yubeng’s name originated. It is a 5-hour roundtrip from Lower Yubeng. About 10% of the hike is level ground, 70% is a steep hike and 20% is very steep. Buddhists coming to this area on pilgrimmages circumambulate the waterfall 13 times with the belief that this act will set them free from all sins from this life. In the early afternoon we’ll walk back to Yubeng Lower Village (2 hours) where we’ll rest up for the long hike the next day.

  • TREK TO NINONG / DRIVE TO YANMEN

Today we don't go back through the same route that we hiked in, we can venture the steep narrow path along Ninong Grand Canyon and descend to Ninong Village if there is no rain. We will spend the whole morning walking down in Yubeng Valley, along the Yubeng River to the Mekong River point. Parts of the trail we will cover are actually a canal dig along the half-way mountain by local villagers. We might be little willies and exciting because some parts of Yubeng river valley are so deep that we have to walk close to the mountain side (actually the path in general is 1 or 1.5 m wide). And the altitude drops also to 2,000m, causing quite different views on the way. Have lunch in Ninong Village (1,900m), then drive for two hours to Yanmen Village, which is situated in the south of Deqen County, visiting Cizhong Catholic Church. It is amazing that we can see a Christian church in Tibetan area. It was first constructed by French missionaries more than 100 years ago. The church locates at the village, where ethnic groups such as Chinese Han, Tibetan and Naxi people live together harmoniously.

Tongluo, located at the national protection zone of traditional culture, is a typical Lisu village. It is named as the ecological cultural village by UNESCO. Based on the distinctive climatic characteristics at different altitudes, Lisu people have developed an effective vertical agriculture system. They cultivate rice and wheat in the Mekong River Basin at an altitude of 1,740m. They have not only properly utilized local natural resources, but also developed a related cultural system to facilitate their agriculture production. We can also go to the fun-filled, authentic Lisu Market if the time permits. After lunch in Weixi Town center, continue driving and check in the hotel in the later of afternoon when we arrive in Tacheng.

  • DRIVE TO TACHENG / LIMING

This morning, we will have a tour of Tacheng Golden Monkey National Park. As a national park integrating primitive ecology, Neolithic sites, religious pilgrimage place, paradise of Black Snub-Nosed Monkey and multi-national style, the scenic area is particularly distinguished with the religious culture and temple scenic spots such as the dense forest, valuable and rare animals and Patriarch Bodhidharma's Cave as well as “Re Ba” of Tibetans and customs of Lisu Nationality. Samage Nature Reserve has hundreds of Black Snub-Nosed Monkeys, a national Grade I protection animal in China. Living in the deep remote forests of southwestern China, this human-like species are becoming one of the most endangered primates on Earth because of the habitat loss and illegal hunting. We will have the unique experience of watching the feeding of the snub-nose monkey and taking photos closely.

After lunch, drive 1.5 hours to Liming Lisu Town. Liming is featured by the Red Sandstone Karst Mountains Landscape (Danxia Landform), where Lisu people inhabit the deep valleys. These beautiful layered peaks are some of the highest of their kind in China and are especially mystical because of an amazing view happening at certain times of a year, it is that the rising and falling of the sun can be seen three times in one day. This is actually caused by the angle of the three peaks which block the sun throughout the day. We will visit a Lisu village en toute and take a 4 hours hike around the beautiful Danxia Landform.
